PANNICULECTOMY
The pannus is that apron of abdominal skin and fat that hangs over the pubic region. Thus, a panniculectomy is the removal of this pannus. The incision is placed along the belt line and usually extends from hip to hip. This procedure only removes the abdominal apron of skin and fat. By definition, it does not relocate the belly button (umbilicus). Also, this surgery does not allow for abdominal muscle (rectus abdominis) tightening nor repair of any hernias. This procedure can be covered by insurance however, completely depends on the insurance carrier, the presence of documented rashes, and overall physical deformity. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take about 2-3 hours. Typically, you will spend 1 to 2 hours in the recovery room. Often, you can go home the same day or be watched overnight in a hospital.
