Nutrition Before and After Surgery
TO ALL CANDIDATES FOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES
This is to inform you of the importance of good nutrition prior to and after any surgical procedure.
There have been many studies showing that nutrition is key to helping in a quick recovery from surgery. It is important that you attempt to achieve optimal nutritional status prior to and after any surgical procedure. Here are a few suggestions to accomplish that goal:
Frequent small meals (5-6 per day) that are high in complete protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates, and moderately low in fat. An example of a small nutritious meal is a sandwich made with whole grain bread, mustard, lean turkey, and tomato, with a glass of low fat or skim milk, and a piece of fresh fruit.
Avoidance of "empty" calories, e.g. foods that are high in calories but do not contain any other nutrients. These include candy, chocolate, potato chips, corn chips, regular soda, sugar, pastries, and donuts. These foods will fill you up without providing the essential nutrients needed to help your recover from surgery.
You may need to supplement you diet with a vitamin/mineral supplement if you are unable to meet your nutritional needs through a regular, healthy diet.
Exercise, especially those that build muscle, is very important to minimize protein losses after surgery. Be sure to consult your physician regarding physical activity post-operatively.
Nutrition supplemental drinks may be recommended if you are unable to meet your nutritional needs post-operatively through a regular, healthy diet.

Nutrition Guidelines for the Katzen Power/Body Lift
- 100 g protein/day: Emphasis on dietary sources of proteins of high biological value
Protein supplements as needed
- Energy: 8-9 calories/lb (actual body weight)/day
- Fat: : 30g/day
Emphasis on essential fatty acids (i.e. canola or soybean oil) - Fluids: 0.4-0.6 fl oz/lb/day
- Vitamin B-12 supplement : 350ug/day orally OR 1000ug intramuscularly every 3 weeks
OR 500ug intranasally every week
- Folate supplement1: 400-800ug/day in a multivitamin Recommended for women of childbearing age
- Calcium supplement with vitamin D1: 1200-2000mg Cawith 400-800IU Vitamin A
- Iron supplement1: 40-65mg/day maintenance If malabsorption occurs, 320mg twice a day, especially in menstruating women Recommend ferrous sulfate/fumarate/gluconate
- Multi-vitamin/mineral supplement with B-complex and fat-soluble
vitamins: 1-2/day (*see source below)
- Resume exercise as tolerated with emphasis on muscle building exercises
